Thanks; that answered a few things that puzzled me re: US health. A sliding scale health care system for a state seems fair(er) than what I've read about. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with whatever health options I can get in Iowa, for relationship reasons, and am betting that with a not great health record, it's going to eventually cost me big time.

The number you call on your health insurance card gets you talking to a registered nurse who can to a general set of questions and answers and help you decide if you should go in to an emergency room [higher costs, often long waits, not your usual doctor] or wait until after the weekend and be seen by your regular doctor. I am insured through my job (I pay zero for my health care) and I have a $75 co-pay for emergency room visits which is reasonable in a relative way. If I did not have health care, I could still get treated at my local hospital but would have to work out a payment plan. However since VT is the only (I think?) US states that has sliding scale health care available to all residents, I'd still have health care even if I lost my job. One of the many reason why I live here.

Ah, there was a story(reads on) eeek :-( As a Brit, reading this:

"...and called my health insurance, described my symptoms and they were like..."

always makes me freak out and hyperventilate, worry about moving to the USA. The concept of phoning your health insurance, not a doctor, I have difficulty getting my head around. Unfortunately, as I've discovered, the advice "Gin cures everything" is sadly incorrect :-(

I pay (directly) around $12 a month for prescriptions, and the two operations and numerous (many) tests over the last 10 months have been free at the point of use (tho' that's why we have higher taxation, to pay for the NHS).

Nowhere is perfect, but the insurance and bills and stuff for health and medical things in the US of A scare the Dickens out of me.

Anytime something like this happens to me, I always think, "the universe did this to me because it was saving me from a worse fate." So just think, if you hadn't stepped in that hole, you might have walked ten more feet and been run over by a bus or hit by lightening and DIED! So, yay for the avulsion fractures of the world. (At least, that's one way to make the pain and annoyance seem worthy.) And wow, the one thing the barn did not have was an old wheelchair - too bad. I hope you feel better soon.

Saundra did the same sort of thing (stepping in a hole, injuring her ankle) moving into her new house, has been limping for a few weeks now.
